doorpanels-300x200.jpgYou can do it yourself for a less than what it would cost to hire an expert. It requires the right tools and only an hour or two of your time.

Glass

If your single-pane windows are old, deteriorating or broken, replacing them with newer glass that is tempered or insulated can increase energy efficiency and reduce noise while maintaining the original character of older homes. A majority of homeowners with hand tools can replace a window pane. Alongside a replacement pane, the following components are required such as latex glazing putty; Glazier's points; pliers and the use of a heat gun to warm the old putty if required. Before starting, wear protective gloves and goggles since working with broken glass can cause injuries.

Remove any broken glass pieces remaining. This can be done with the help of pliers though using a flathead screwdriver may be effective in the pinch. Then, use a wooden chisel, or putty knife, to take the remainder of the old putty from around the frame and sash. Work slowly and carefully making sure not to break the existing window sash. It is best to work on a stable ladder rather than on the ground and have someone stand [Redirect-302] below the sash in order to help hold it steady.

Once you've removed all the old putty, prepare the window replacement panes frame for the new pane. To allow for seasonal expansion or contraction by subtracting 1/8 inch from the measurements of width and height. Take these measurements to the nearest hardware store or home center and get a piece of stock glass cut to size. You can also cut the glass by yourself if you have the right tools.

After putting the new pane in place After installing the new pane, apply a small amount of caulking around the edge to seal it against weather. Install a glazier's point on both sides of the frame. This will secure the pane. The points should not be so tight that they create friction between the sash and frame, but they also shouldn't be loose.

Before applying the putty, work it in a gentle manner until it is smooth and free of lumps. Then, roll it into pencil-size strips. The first strip should be glued to the frame's corner. Work from corner to corner and ensure that it is even and smooth.

Glazier's Points

The glazier’s points are small triangular pieces of steel that allow glass to be secured into the window frame without causing damage to the delicate surface. Knowing how to use these hidden tiny helpers is simple and could save you money on a professional installation or the cost of new glass.

After getting rid of the old putty glazier points as well as any remaining leftovers, clean the frame thoroughly with an utility knife. If needed, lightly sand the wood along the grooves of the rabbets to smooth out rough spots. If you decide to sand wood, protect it with painter’s tape to prevent accidental damage.

Note down the dimensions of the frame. These measurements can be taken to the hardware or home center store and the new pane will be cut to a smaller size. This will ensure that the pane fits perfectly and allows for expansion and contraction.

Place the new pane in the frame and push it into the frame with your hand. Utilize the chisel's point or the edge of the putty blade to smudge the glaziers' points as shown in Figure 11. When you're done, they should be in line with the top edge of the pane and the shoulders of the points should be just below the rabbet's lip. groove.

Apply a thin layer of glazing compound on the rabbet grooves as well as the edges of the glass. This will seal and protect the edges. Let it dry completely and cure.

Install the new window sash after the glazing compound has dried. First, saturate the wood with a heavy coat of linseed oil. This will prevent the new putty from soaking up moisture and drying out and cracking with time. Apply this coat with a brush or the tip of your knife, and then use the chisel, or the back end of the putty knife to gently hammer the new sash and glazier's tips into the rabbet grooves. Repeat this process at intervals of 10 inches all around the frame.

Putty

A baseball thrown, a rock thrown in error, or a tree falling can result in a cracked or cracked window pane. Most windows can be replaced by simply putting in a fresh piece. The glass is held in place by a small metal clip called a glazier's point and putty, which is often called glazing compound. Before you install a new pane, first take out the old one and clean the area using the help of a rag, a pull-type paint scraper or a wood chisel. Wear protective glasses and gloves when you work. You'll need a heat gun if the window is glued to the frame.

If you are planning to install your original sash, remove the mold that holds the old pane. Then sand the sash to make sure it's flat and ready for new caulk. Once the sash is installed it is possible to apply a silicone caulk to the glass. This will ensure that it won't be leaking or fade over time.

Remove the glazing points from the rabbets. These are the grooves on the sash, which is where the glass is. If they're hard to chisel out, try placing a hand tool like a heat gun over them to soften them before you do. If you're using a heated gun, make sure not to scratch the railings of the sash or the sash itself by placing the tool too close.

Once the old glaze points and putty have been removed make a bed for the new pane. Roll a rope with glazing compound between your fingers and make it around 1/2 inch thick. Press it into the rabbets, where the glass will be put. The glass must rest against the putty on both sides. If you need to, lightly tap your glass into the rabbet with your thumb.

If the new pane is damaged, you can use a silicone caulk or glass glue that is based on solvents to seal the crack prior to pressing it in the sash. If the crack is not sealed, you will need to use putty to keep water out. After the putty has dried, wipe the oily film from the glass and let it dry completely before painting. If you paint before the putty is completely dry, it won't create a solid seal and could be leaking or discoloring over time.

Paint

You may be concerned about replacing a broken pane of glass. It's true that replacing a single pane glass doesn't have to be expensive when you do it on your own. Even a double-paned window could be replaced for a fraction of what it would cost for a professional.

First, if you're working on a large-sized window, ensure that it is securely attached to the frame. This task can be done relatively easy and fast with the right tools and techniques.

When you are ready to begin with the removal of the window pane. Take out the glazing points made of metal that are attached to it. These are essentially small metal triangles which function as "nails" that keep the window in within the frame of wood. They are buried beneath a layer of glazing putty, which is then cured to form a solid, molded wedge which holds the window in place and conceals the window's points.

Once you have the old pane removed Clean up the frame and wood. Scrape off any paint and sand down the rabbet grooves, where the glazing points used to be. Sand them down to bare wood surfaces, so that you can paint the frames the same color. After sanding the wood then apply a layer of flax oil. This will help to prolong the life of the frame.

Next, measure the dimensions of the window's opening. You will need to measure the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the entire opening as well as the thickness. To determine the exact size of the new pane subtract 1/8 inch from both measurements. This will allow for seasonal changes in the glass. Take these measurements to the hardware or home improvement store, and they will have cut the glass for you.

Now, it's time to bed the new window pane. To do this, place the pane inside the frame and move it around until a 1/16 inch of putty remains between the edge of the glass and the sash on all four sides. Use a putty knife to smear the putty evenly, making sure that there isn't an excessive amount of excess putty in the corners and along the edges. When the putty dries, it can be painted with the same color as the frame to prevent water and air from leaking into the frame and causing fogging.
