How to Replace an audi etron key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions but the most effective method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is plugged in but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good news is that they are quite affordable and readily available particularly in the case of an Bosch unit like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous problems in your vehicle. It is a crucial part of the audi keys replacement's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is rotating. When this sensor fails, it could cause problems for the transmission as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost and also to timigrate. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. You can also verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and key audi pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points. This is the same across the Key audi 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 Du You may also find good ones in wrecking yards.
