Lexus.jpgHow to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Citroen.pngIn this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes however the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and Audi Key Replacement Cost Uk the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these sensors go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. The good news is that they are very cheap and easy to find, especially in the case of an Bosch sensor, which is what we have. Alternately, GM's version this component is an option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of issues with your car. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi key fob not working, as it transmits information to the ECU on how fast or slow the engine of the car is spinning. When this sensor fails, it will cause problems for the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control fuel, timig, and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. There should be the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these two points. This is the same across the audi key replacement cost uk (privatehd.org) 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find them in wrecking yards.
